Happy Hobbit Day!
Happy birthday Bilbo and Frodo Baggins!
Tomorrow I’m going to Fell and Fair’s Party of Special Magnificence to celebrate Hobbit Day. There will be tea, cake, and dancing - my favorite things!
So today I wanted to chat about becoming a hobbit. I will say - I have an advantage, I’m the right size and shape already: short and a little round.
Dress Like a Hobbit
To start - how do we dress like a hobbit?
Natural/Earth tones
Comfortable clothes
Incorporate florals
For Women:
Aprons (because there’s a lot of work to do in Hobbiton)
Floral corsets
Layered skirts
Flower crowns
Straw hats
Baskets
For Men
Linen pants
A handsome vest
Straw hats
Walking stick
Satchel of sorts
My Hobbit Attire
For Hobbit day, I definitely wanted to don a floral corset. With the cost of corsets, I definitely decided it would be cheaper to make. And “how hard could it be?”
Famous last words.
I found this sheer floral fabric at JoAnns that I absolutely loved and wanted to incorporate into my corset. Florals always feel very Hobbity. And it was just so pretty!
So I decided to make this as complicated as possible and add the sheer floral fabric onto the corset as ruching/pleats.
I used Butterick B5935 as my pattern and a simple cotton as the base fabric. And I used Pellon SF101 as the interfacing. It has just enough sturdiness to give the corset some shape.
My outfit also needed an apron, as there’s much work to be done! I found this fabric called Hobbit Recipes on Spoonflower. It was perfect for an apron.
And of course, I would need a cloak. I took my old tweed cloak from last year’s weekend warrior event (also hosted by Fell and Fair), and revamped it into a shorter, more fashionable Hobbit cloak. We decided to upgrade our cloaks for this year’s Weekend Warrior to make them waterproof, warmer, and less…burlap-sack-like.
As for the skirt, I found the perfect layered skirt at Goodwill! Don’t be afraid to shop those thrift stores, sometimes you find gold.
What Being a Hobbit Means
The clothing aside, being a hobbit is more than just comfortable clothes. Hobbits are simple folk. They live off of the land, they spend time in nature, and they stick to their communities.
We know of the hobbits that have gone on to have magnificent adventures, but most stay home and tend to their gardens.
And honestly, as much as I love travel and adventure, there really is something to be said about the Hobbit way of life.
Stay tuned! I’ll be sharing my adventures in the shire celebrating at the Party of Special Magnificence as well as my full outfit.
